D- Rush Promotions.
Once again, promoter William Taka Taka
showcased Australian boxing at its finest, and also provided
the young guns in the amateurs, a chance to fight on the
big stage, which was tremendous to see.
After four highly entertaining amateur
fights to start the night, it was straight into the big
boys of the paid ranks. Cruizer weights, Micheal O'Donnell
fought out a four rounder with Jarad Treloar , with O'donnell
winning on points, in a fight which saw Treloar target
and find, O'Donnell's body everytime he threw, but in
the end Treloar's fitness let him down .
Next up was the cocky Mohamed Elomar
against Rubin Santilanosa. Elomar came out firing from
the opening bell with Santilanosa throwing everything
at the much bigger looking Elomar. The small man from
the Phillipines, was the aggressor but Elomar was finding
the mark with more consistant, accurate shots to win impressively.
Experienced boxer, Nagin Gurumu had been in with the very
best in the amateurs, winning Silver in the world cup,
and had also sparred the great "Prince" Nasseem
Hamed as a pro, but tonight he came up against big punching
Costa Katsounis. Gurumu has allways been a confident,
awkward boxer with lightning reflexes and could punch
from every angle but it seems as if his confidence has
gone and with that, so has his reflexes. Katsounis stopped
him by tko at 2:59 seconds of the first round.
Next up was the allways entertaining
Billy" The Kid" Dib. Tonight was a big night
for the kid, as he was stepping up to challenge for the
I.B.O. Asia Pacific Jnr Lightweight title against the
tough Philipino brawler, Robert Oyan. There was no question
that Dib was focused on winning the title. After training
hard in Sheffield, England, with boyhood hero, Naseem
Hamed, and now back in Australia to do the business, Dib
set about the task with crisp, clean punches to the come
forward , willing Oyan. Everytime Oyan got in close, he
ended up smothering his own work, which was a shame as
i wanted to see if the kid could take a punch. Dib's uppercut,
left hook combinations were taking their toll on the short
stocky Philipino, but i was impressed by his footwork,
which was obviously practised a thousand times in the
gym. He still has a way to go on his defence but tonight
he had the title in the bag from the first round. Dib
won comfortably over the twelve rounds to win the I.B.O.
Asia Pacific Title in fine style.
The final fight of the night was former
amateur star, Ahmed "Trigger" Elomar fighting
for the Australian Jnr lightweight title . The champion
was Daniel Hoskins . Hoskins was a proud champion and
gave his all in the ring everytime he laced up the gloves,
so this was allways going to be a good hard fight for
both men. Entering the arena to the tune of "The
good , the bad, and the ugly, " Elomar dressed as
a rootin-tootin cowboy delighted the boxing fans by parading
through the crowd on a white stallion before finally making
it to the ring.
When the bell rang, Elomar came out firing
both barrels and looked as if the stronger looking challenger
was in for an easy night. Hoskins woke up after being
floored in the second [ which was ruled as a slip ] and
landed some good shots, that shook Elomar but the former
amateur star came back with the harder, more telling shots.
No doubt about it, Hoskins had a hell of a beard, as he
took alot of big punches but refused to roll over, then
in the 9th round, after an accidental clash of heads,
Hoskins recieved a gash to the eye , and the referee stepped
in to stop the procedings. The doctor was called in and
he stopped the contest, and under the rules , it went
to the scorecards to decide the winner. 80-71 80-71 80
-71 , all for the new champion Ahmed Elomar.
All in all, it was a tremendous night
at the fights. with William Taka Taka willing to put on
the best talent out there , lets hope there's more to
come.
