Rowsell Defeated TKO1
Courageous Aussie Cruiserweight Daniel Rowsell stepped up for the fight of his life against big hitting Russian Valery Brudov in France. Unfortunately, a hefty left from Brudov sent Daniel to the canvas, and his corner made the decision to save their fighter from harm, throwing in the towel. Congratulations to Daniel & team for taking a chance, and commiserations on the loss.
Brudov destroys Roswell

By Christian Chataignier at ringside for FIGHT NEWS

Russian cruiser Valery Brudov (25-0; 18KOs) didn't need too much time to earn the mandatory spot in the WBA ranks and position himself for a shot at current champion Jean-Marc Mormeck. As a matter of fact, Brudov stopped Australian contender Daniel Roswell (26-3-1; 15KOs) in the opening round of an official eliminator moments ago in Levallois, France: Roswell tried to dictate the pace of the fight with his left jab, but an impressive left hook by Brudov sent him to the canvas after less than two minutes into the fight. Seconds later, the Australian corner threw in the towel to save their man. In other action, former WBA 122lb champ Salim Medjkoune (42-4-1; 21KOs) topped Manuel Sequera (6-6; 5KOs) of Spain over eight rounds. After the fight, Medjkoune told Fightnews.com that he needs at least another tune-up before getting back into title contention.

No more Mr Cool

By PAUL KENT - Daily Telegraph
December 11, 2003

DANIEL Rowsell flew out for France on Monday aware the time has come.

Gone was the laid-back cool, the easy pace that Rowsell embraced through his boxing career. Rowsell is now in a real fight. He takes on Russian Valery Brudov next Wednesday and the prize is the No. 1 mandatory ranking to fight either WBA champion Jean Marc Mormeck, or Virgil Hill if Hill beats Mormeck in January.

Rowsell has boxed for 18 years and only got serious about it 12 months ago.

For a time there he broke horses for a living; he trained an unraced five-year-old that finally broke down once too often, and all the while boxing subsidised his lifestyle.

He was guaranteed to turn up for a night out and, along with the Elvis good looks, he could turn a mean Suspicious Minds on the karaoke.

But he is 30 now and there are more days behind him than in front of him, the evidence of which is in his latest workouts, which leave him fatigued.

He has decided his talent will no longer get him through. He changed the way he sparred, forcing himself to get busier in the ring. He changed the way he trained, stopping the playful showboating that would sometimes deteriorate into sloppy efforts. He has spent a week in Canberra training with Kostya Tszyu and another week sparring Paul Briggs.

He sparred eight rounds with Danny Green yesterday, tough hard rounds, and he left unimpressed with his performance, saying he felt a little flat. It wasn't that bad.

To prepare for Brudov, Rowsell has gone away from his normal tight defence to a more liberal style, based around a high workrate and the mindset to attack.

He has been hit more often than usual but has landed more of his own.

The plan against Brudov is that his natural defensive instinct will kick in anyway yet his recent work on offence will win through.

Everything about this fight is different.

Saturday night he went to bed and for the first time since he can remember he laid in bed thinking about Brudov and how he might fight him, what he might expect, what Plan B is if Plan A doesn't work.

"It's going to make me lift to somewhere I've never been before," he said. "Before, I've never fought somebody here where I actually thought I could get beat.

"Even when I fought Paul Briggs [who stopped him on cuts], I still thought I could win the fight, and he has been my best opponent."

Those who know him believe he is different this fight. More introspective. "I am going to fight somebody I haven't seen a real lot of," he said before flying out.

"He looks to be a pretty good puncher, a pretty good boxer. It's probably the first time I'll be going into a a fight that I'm thinking to myself that I've got to be 100 per cent on my game. And then some."

Rowsell, 30, was always happy to earn a few quid fighting while he got on with life.

Last month he was flown to Hong Kong to star in a TV commercial for an internet service. They liked his look.

Before he left Monday he went to a recall for a television ad for Gillette razors.

Come Wednesday he will wear blue trunks with a white Southern Cross stitched on to the left leg, a dazzling look which is reassuring. For, clearly, Elvis hasn't completely left the building.

Daniel thriving in Kostya's lion den

By PAUL KENT - Daily Telegraph November 27, 2003

THE physical high Daniel Rowsell is getting this week is only just beginning to match the emotional high. Rowsell, the PABA cruiserweight champion, is in Canberra training alongside Kostya Tszyu and, it must be said, he has been put through some hurt.

Tszyu has offered to help Rowsell prepare for a world title eliminator, confirmed over the weekend, that will see Rowsell fight for the WBA title next year. "I've been training 18 years for this one fight," Rowsell said. "None of the others matter." He fights Russian Valery Brudov in France on December 16, with the winner becoming mandatory to fight the winner of the Jean-Marc Mormeck and Virgil Hill fight in January.

"I'm feeling really good at the moment," Rowsell said after another full day's training yesterday. Tszyu has Rowsell training three times a day, two hours at a time, and has offered to share some of his private training tips that he believes can make the difference.

"Kostya has said what he does but he said 'I'll change it around for you'," Rowsell said. "We're doing a lot of explosive sets. "He watched my last fight and he says he has got a few things that we can work on." Unlike a previous training camp the pair shared, when Rowsell found himself training alongside a fit Tszyu while starting from scratch, Rowsell is in the final weeks of preparation and the benefits are telling. So much so he goes to bed each night on a physical high as his body responds to the endorphins released during training.

Before heading to Canberra, sparring sessions against Danny Green and Lawrence Tauasa sharpened him considerably.

When the week in Canberra is over Rowsell will go to the Gold Coast to spar Paul Briggs for a week before he heads to France. "I've spent the last couple of weeks doing a fair bit of sparring so I'm in a fair bit of form that way," he said.

ROWSELL – BRUDOV IN OFICIAL ELIMINATOR DECEMBER 16!

Australia’s WBA number eight Cruiserweight Daniel 'Cowboy' Rowsell (26-2-1,
15 KO) meets Russian Valery Brudov (25-0, 18 KO)- the number seven
contender-at Levallois, France on December 16 with the winner guaranted the
number one rating and a shot at the winner of next months Jean Marc
Mormeck-Virgil Hill title fight.

Thirty year old Rowsell, the PABA champion who was last in action of October
29, scoring a seven round stoppage of Argentine journeyman Sergio Baez,
flies out to France on Monday with brothers Justin and Tyson (TJ) but
without legendary trainer Johnny Lewis, who reunited with Daniel this year.
Lewis cannot make the trip due to commitments with world super lightweight
champion Kostya Tszyu. The Brudov fight is also important in the fact it’s
the first unification of the PABA/EBA titles and officials will be nuetral.
Contracts were signed on November 23.

Eastside briefly caught up with the engaging Rowsell at the Penrith Panthers
fight promotion in Sydney on Friday night.

Eastside: Daniel, tell us what this fight means to you.

Daniel Rowsell: Everything! This fight is why I have been in boxing for
eighteen years. It's the defining fight of my career. Every other fight I’ve
had, all the good wins, all the mistakes I’ve made mean nothing. This is the
fight I’ve needed to really get motivated.

ESB: What do you know of Brudov and how has your preparation been?

DR: All I know is his record. We are going to get some tapes tonight from
Stuart Duncan who negotiated the deal for us. He has a nice record but he
hasn’t fought anybody with my ability. My preparation has been good. If I
win this fight, then good. If I don’t well I will know that I have given it
my best shot. I don't want it to be an easy fight. I really want to earn it.
I hope he gets in there and is tough. I’ve been sparring Paul Briggs and
Danny Green as well as Shannan Taylor early in the piece. I had good
workouts with Briggsy this week, good fast work. I’m sparring Danny again
tomorrow. Also going to camp with Kostya was invaluable. It really helped my
conditioning and he showed me a few little tricks that I’ve used in sparring
and they’ve worked.

ESB: How has your boxing developed this year with Johnny Lewis?

DR: It’s gone to a new level. I’m fitter , my punches are sharper and my
body punches have been putting guys away. I’ve had to put the work in with
Johnny and I’m hungry.

ESB: How will the fact Johnny wont be in France affect you?

DR: It’s sad not having Johnny there but I have every confidence in Justin
and TJ.
In many ways, Justin is like Johnny, very calm and he can read a fight.
Justin has been in big fights himself. I don’t want a big crew there, I just
want to go over and win the fight.

ESB: How did this fight eventuate?

DR: They (A-B Stars) contacted my brother TJ. It was originally TJ who got
the ball rolling. He started the negotiating before Stuart (Duncan)
eventually came in and finalised everything.

ESB: The winner of this fight will be the new number one as soon as Hill
challenges Mormeck. You sparred Virgil when he was based in Australia in the
early 90’s. Tell us about that experience?

DR: Sparring Virgil was an awesome experience. He is such a professional in
everything he does and a lovely guy. I don’t know what will happen in the
Mormeck fight and I have no favourite about who I fight for the title. All I
know is, whoever is in the other corner, I will give it everything.

ESB: Thanks Daniel and all the best.

DR: Anytime.
