COTTO TAKES THE NDOU TEST |

- By Tony Nobbs for EASTSIDE
BOXING |
Lovemore Ndou gets the opportunity to shock the boxing world on
Sunday when he battles unbeaten Puerto Rican star Miguel Cotto
in the chief support to Pacquaio - Marquez at the MGM Grand in
Las vegas. Ndou (38-6-124 KO) and Cotto (19-0, 16 KO) go at it
for the IBF number one position in the jnr welterweight division.
Cotto’s WBA Fedebox and WBC International belts are also on the
line and the 32 year old South African born fighter from Sydney,
Australia vows he won’t be intimidated by his 23 year old opponents
reputation.
In Ndou’s last bout in the states on February 8 he gave Sharmba
Mitchell a tough night in Atlantic City losing a unanimous decision
that many fans and experts thought he won. Ndou’s Melbourne based
manager Stuart Duncan, in predicting an upset told Eastside that
he expects this bout to not go to the scorecards. “Lovemore has
had a longer preparation than he did for Sharmba. It was his fight
with Sharmba that gave us the profile to land this fight. We are
very grateful for the fight with Miguel Cotto. We have the upmost
respect for Miguel and his team but Lovemore will not dissapoint.
I will go as far as to say Lovemore will knock him out”.
Ndou
and his management have been very vocal in letting it known they
will take on any of the divisions elite and the ‘Black Panther’
has stated that he believes Cotto was pushed into fighting him
by HBO. Against Mitchell, the Roy Alexander trained Ndou proved
he can hack it in the top ten and will go into this fight as the
hot Cotto’s most in form opponent. “A credible loss will not hurt
Lovemore but a win will really put him in the position to get
a return with Sharmba and then maybe an All Australian world title
fight with Kostya Tszyu”.
Against
Mitchell, Ndou showed why he was rated at one time as high as
number two for Stevie Johnson’s WBC lightweight title. He will
need another inspired performance to conquer Cotto. Australian
fight fans will be hoping he can revenge fellow Sydney boxer Anthony
Mundine’s loss to Cotto’s countryman Manny Siaca this past Wednesday.
Following Lovemore’s career since he permanently based Down Under
in 1996, having sat in his corner for one fight and against him
in two, on his night, anything is possible. At the official weigh-in
Friday, Cotto scaled 139 lb, Ndou 138.

LETTER TO RICKY HATTON FROM LOVEMORE NDOU |
As supplied to Paul Upham, Seconds
Out
Firstly
Ricky, congratulations on your career and performances to date.
I
write this letter to publicly challenge you to step up and take
me on in September. My manager Stuart Duncan has sent correspondence
to your promoter Frank Warren and has had no response on numerous
occasions. I am currently rated No.12 in the world with the IBF
and am the IBF Pan Pacific junior welterweight champion.
I
am prepared to travel to your hometown, enabling your local fans
to see you perform. My manager has an understanding of a previous
purse amount that was paid to a recent opponent of yours and under
no circumstances will we price ourselves out of making the fight
a reality. We are prepared to work with your promoter for any
media commitments or any other reasonable requests that would
assist in any way.
All
too often good boxers get into the ring for a world title without
really being tested against credible opponents. I look through
your record and it is time for you to step up and face a real
credible opponent who is on the way up the world ratings.
If
you feel you are up to it, take my challenge to your promoter
and tell him here’s a credible opponent you are prepared
to fight.
Many
times we see the trash talk – ridiculing of opponents and
other tactics. As often as we see that happen, we rarely see the
bouts eventuate due to management making business decisions. Prove
to your fans in your hometown that you are prepared to step up
and take on a willing top 15 rated opponent. You show your heart
and courage and step up to meet with me and we are more than prepared
to offer a re-match on contract in the event that we win.
Basically
you have a credible opponent where the purse won’t be a
barrier. We are prepared to travel, we are prepared to enter into
a contractual re-match and are prepared to work in with your promoter
to ensure that every effort is undertaken on our part to make
the show a success. I have a current medical certificate with
recent brain scan results and am in perfect health. So basically
from our end we are ready to go. The rest is up to you.
I
read on the Internet recently that you are looking for an opponent
for September, well here I am!
I
know and can understand how Junior Witter is like a boil on your
arse, don’t categorize me as a thorn in your side and “take
the challenge Ricky”.
My
Manager Stuart Duncan or Promoter Goosen Tutor Promotions will
now await your call.
Kind
regards
Lovemore

OVERCOMES FAMILY TRAGEDY TO STOP LEIVA TKO7 |
|
By Paul Upham:
Seconds Out
IBF Pan Pacific junior welterweight champion Lovemore Ndou (pictured)
overcame a family tragedy this week to defeat Argentine Cesar
Alberto Leiva 38-6 (19) by seventh round knockout on Friday night
at the Panthers World of Entertainment in Penrith, Australia.
Ndou’s sister passed away during the week in South Africa
after a battle with cancer and the hard-hitting IBF No.12 was
understandably not his usual outgoing self in the dressing room
before the fight.
Once entering
the ring however, an aggressive Ndou seemed to be at his best,
throwing lightening fast combinations. Watching the action from
ringside, ANBF President Brad Vocale marvelled at the “Black
Panther’s” hand speed remarking, “if he throws
his punches any faster his gloves will come flying off!”
Ndou, 34-5-1
(21), dropped 32 year-old Leiva with a solid body shot in the
second round. An experienced campaigner who had only been previously
stopped once in his career and whose only losses have come at
the hands of world rated boxers Omar Weis and Wilfredo Vilches,
the Argentine worked hard to get himself back into the contest
in the middle rounds before being dropped with another Ndou body
rip. Referee Charlie Lucas counting him out at the 2:53 minute
mark in the seventh round.
“Hopefully
in my next fight, my mind will be more clear. People can expect
a better performance,” said a sombre Ndou, in his dressing
room after the fight. “I won the fight, but I know I could
have done better than that. At my best I feel I could have stopped
him in one or two rounds.”
While Ndou
was critical of his performance, not everyone felt that he was
disappointing in victory.
“I predicted
a win between round seven and tonight and I am ecstatic with his
performance,” said manager Stuart Duncan.
The 31 year-old
Ndou is scheduled to return to the ring again in September at
the Panthers World of Entertainment on a card promoted by Roy
Alexander, before hopefully travelling to the USA for a spot on
the Dan Goossen promoted Holyfield-Toney card in Las Vegas on
October 4. Duncan and Ndou would not reveal the name of the potential
opponent, only saying that he is very well known throughout the
boxing world.
With such
a busy schedule, this reporter asked Ndou whether he still had
time for the challenge he had extended to English power puncher
WBC No.3 Ricky Hatton earlier this week?
“The
door is always open for Ricky Hatton,” said Ndou, finally
with a smile on his face. “He should have taken me on tonight
when my mind wasn’t perfect. Maybe he would have stood a
better chance of beating me. But on any given day, I feel that
I will take Ricky Hatton out. There is always space there for
Ricky. I will always accommodate him.”
Ndou will
now travel with his wife and children to South Africa over the
weekend to attend his sister’s funeral. The two-week stay
will be Ndou’s first visit to his home country since he
immigrated to Australia in 1996.

17.07 - IBF Pan Pacific Lt Welterweight Champion Lovemore 'Panther'
Ndou (33-5-1, 20 KO) defends his tile against Argentine Cesar Leiva
(38-5, 19 KO) at Panthers Leagues Club in Penrith, West Sydney on
Friday night. And the 31 year old Ndou is looking to leap into the
top ten with a convincing victory over the former IBF Latin American
Champ. Ndou currently sits at number twelve.
Lovemore's
manager Stuart Duncan told Eastside today that the Ndou camp are
not under estimating Leiva. "Lovemore is expecting this guy
to come to fight. He is after a rating to get his career on track-just
as Lovemore needs the win. Cesar is going to be a tough, fit opponent".
Duncan also
said the Roy Alexander trained Ndou has a fight lined up in the
U.S in October and that he is "fiercely chasing a fight with
Ricky Hatton"for his fighter, last in action in March- scoring
an eight round Tech. Dec. over Damian Fuller in Mississippi.

| LOVEMORE'S
REVELATION |
By GRANTLEE KIEZA
12jul03
A FUNNY thing happened on the way to the canvas for Lovemore N'Dou,
the human tornado trying to jag a fight with Kostya Tszyu.
He was boxing
one of Tszyu's sparring partners, a coyote thin, cactus tough
Mexican named Jose Luis Juarez outdoors in San Jacinto, California,
before a crowd eating hot chilli peppers in the blistering sun.
Juarez started
fast and scored a knockdown in the third round, but Lovemore rallied
to dominate the middle stages before Juarez decked him again in
the ninth to win a close decision.
After he got
up the first time, N'Dou fought back with the burning hunger in
his eyes that he's had ever since he was a barefoot kid on the
dusty, red streets in Messina, a copper mining town in South Africa.
But as N'Dou
was heading to the deck for the second time in that fight he had
a blinding revelation.
He realised
his future lay, not in the lightweight division, but 2.5kg heavier
as a 63.5kg fighter to rival junior-welterweight champ Kostya
Tszyu.
"Making
the weight was killing me," said N'Dou, who hopes to advance
a step further to fighting Tszyu with a win over Argentine Cesar
Alberto Leiva at Penrith Panthers next Friday night.
"I got
up as high as No. 2 in the world as a lightweight but fighting
Juarez in the sun showed me that I was hurting myself more than
my opponents by boiling down."
These days
N'Dou, 31, combines training with coach Roy Alexander every day
with his studies at UTS for a degree in communications.
His preparations
for the Leiva fight have been hampered by daily visits to hospital
for the past five days as his daughter Marion, 2, has been fighting
her own battle with a bacterial infection."She is on the
mend now," said N'Dou, a father of three, "but it is
very worrying when you have small children and they get sick."It
is hard to stay focused when you know you have a very hard fight
on your hands against a world-class boxer in a few days."
Leiva has
won 38 of 43 fights and has a win over Alberto Cortes, conqueror
of former world champ Lester Ellis.
N'Dou is not
shy when it comes to pushing his title claims and at the Danny
Green-Jason De Lisle fight at Panthers on June 2 walked straight
up to Tszyu, who was dining ringside, and asked: "When are
you going to give me a shot at the title."
"Kostya
just laughed," N'Dou said, "we go back a long way together
and I sparred dozens of rounds with him over the years.
"But
boxing is a business and while I think Kostya is a really great
guy I would still love to fight him because I believe I can win.
I would be a much tougher challenge than his last opponent, Jesse
James Leija, and as the IBF Pan Pacific champion I qualify for
a title fight."
N'Dou, who
has 33 wins and a draw in 39 starts, is looking to regain the
sort of form he had when he stopped two-time world title challenger
Renato Cornett in 2000.
Remarkably,
the man helping him get there is Cornett's former trainer Roy
Alexander, the one-time middleweight champ, who was in Cornett's
corner when he battled IBF lightweight champ Paul Spadafora.
"Boxing
is a strange game," N'Dou said. "You can be mortal enemies
one week and the next you are working together like brothers."
Next Friday's card also sees Lawrence Tauasa defend his national
cruiserweight title against former champ Jamie Wallace.

TO FACE CESAR LEIVA JULY 18 |
By
Paul Upham:Seconds
Out
DMS Boxing today announced in conjunction with
Blaster Promotions, that they have secured Argentine Cesar Alberto
Leiva to face IBF Pan Pacific junior welterweight champion the
“Black Panther” Lovemore Ndou over 12 rounds of boxing
on July 18, 2003 at the Panthers World of Entertainment in Penrith,
NSW, Australia.
After
lengthy negotiations 32 year-old Leiva has agreed to travel to
Australia to take on the Australia based South African Ndou in
a must win battle for both men.
Leiva
comes to the ring with a record of 38 wins and 5 losses, with
19 wins by knockout. He is an experienced campaigner whose only
losses have come at the hands of world rated boxers Omar Weis,
Wilfredo Vilches (twice) and Diego Gimenez (twice). Leiva is a
former IBF Latin American champion and has only ever been stopped
once in his 43-fight career (Weis KO10, January 2000).
The
“Black Panther”, whose record stands at 33 wins, 5
losses and 1 draw with 20 wins by knockout, is coming off a tough
victory in the USA in April on the Fox Television Network over
Detroit’s Damien Fuller (21-3) and is looking forward to
taking on Leiva.
“He
is an experienced and durable opponent who takes it up to everyone
he has ever entered the ring with,” said 31 year-old Ndou.
“I am expecting a tough fight, however I am confident that
I am back to my best and will be able handle Leiva comfortably.”
Ndou’s
manager Stuart Duncan worked closely with trainer Roy Alexander
in identifying Leiva as a suitable opponent.
“The
last thing we wanted was to bring over another Fijian or Indonesian.
We wanted Wilfredo Vilches (IBF No.14), but he was unavailable
to fight on this date,” said Duncan. “We see every
fight as a stepping stone at this stage of Lovemore’s career
and believe that with Lovemore getting closer to a top ten rating
again, we have to have him fight credible boxers.”
Leading
USA promoter Dan Goossen and his company Goossen Tutor Promotions
are looking to schedule Ndou on one of their shows in August against
an opponent to be named.
“We
are also negotiating with promoter Ross Clout to have him as a
main event on his show in NSW in September,” said Duncan,
who wants to keep Ndou as busy as possible to speed him into the
IBF top ten.
“We
believe that with wins on these three occasions in July, August
and September, Lovemore will be back into a position whereby he
can start to look for world title shots early in 2004.”
IBF
No.13 Ndou had been hoping to fight in the UK against WBO No.1
Junior Witter in 2003, but despite inquires on behalf of Duncan,
it seems the fight cannot be made.
“Witter
and his team won’t respond so we had to find someone else,”
said Duncan. “Eventually, when Lovemore is world champion,
they will all be coming to us looking for a fight.”

ALL NEW LOVEMORE NDOU |
By
Paul Upham: Seconds
Out
After his exciting April 5 win on Fox Sports Net Sunday Night
Fights on American television in the USA, South African born junior
welterweight the “Black Panther” Lovemore Ndou, 33-5-1
(20), believes that he has now been reborn as a fighter.
“This
is a new version of Lovemore Ndou,” said the 31 year-old,
after his eight round win over Damian Fuller, 21-3 (10), at the
Silver Star Casino in Choctaw, Mississippi. Ndou winning a technical
decision on points after sustaining a bad cut to his right eye
from an accidental head clash, but not before the two fighters
put on a real entertaining war.
“The
old Lovemore is more of a boxer and he never wanted to mix it
up, he just wanted to box and whip people from the outside,”
said Ndou. “But the new Lovemore, he does it all. He can
sit in there and rumble with you or box you from the outside.”
Formerly
rated as high as No.2 by the WBC at lightweight, since moving
up to the 140lbs division and winning the IBF Pan Pacific title,
Ndou says he is feeling so much better when he steps into fight.
“It’s
going to be like this all the time. When I get into the ring,
expect a tough fight. I’m feeling a lot stronger and a lot
more powerful. My punching power has really improved,” he
said.
“You
can tell I was a big lightweight. In the end I was just killing
myself to make the weight. Now I am just comfortable. I’m
eating every day. I’m still having three meals, even in
the week before the fight.”
While
he is dedicated to his boxing career, his fight in the USA was
not going to prevent Ndou from attending university in Sydney
where he is completing a Bachelor of Law and Bachelor of Communications
degree for life after boxing. After fighting in the USA on the
Saturday night, Ndou flew home to Australia on the following Tuesday
morning at 8am, but still managed to attend class at 11am.
“Everyone
was surprised. I just got off the plane and I was back in class,”
he said.
“All
of my teachers were very impressed that I was there. The people
who had seen the fight on television on Monday night on Fox Sports,
not knowing it was on delay here in Australia, could not believe
that I was back in class already with stitches on my eye.”
After
having had the chance to watch the fight a few times, Ndou was
happy with the win, though disappointed with the cut, which will
prevent a quick return to the ring. “It was a bad cut. I
got it stitched up and the doctor did a really good job,”
said Ndou, who expects to be unable to spar for around three to
four weeks.
“I
watched the fight on television and I think it was a great fight.
I knew Fuller was going to be tough, but I didn’t know he
was going to be that tough. I didn’t think he could punch
that hard. At the end of the first round he caught me with a punch
that wobbled me. I had no respect for his power, I was just trying
to walk through him, but that’s boxing, like they say, anyone
can punch, it’s just a matter of finding the right spot.”
Ndou
paid tribute to trainer Roy Alexander who helped greatly with
the preparation for this fight, “I really appreciate him
working with me,” he said.
The
best message to come out of the fight for Ndou was, “Lovemore
is back and he is back in business,” he said. “My
promoter Dan Goossen was impressed with my performance and he
feels it is time for him to lift me up and get me some big fights.
It’s time to chase the world title.”
While
he will have to miss out on a planned May defence of his IBF Pan
Pacific title in Australia, Ndou is looking to get back over to
the USA again very soon.
“The
plan is for Dan Goossen to get me back in the USA, probably around
June, depending on my eye,” he said.
“With
great people like my manager Stuart Duncan and Dan Goossen and
his team behind me, I can really concentrate on becoming world
champion in the ring, knowing that out of the ring everything
is being taken care of.”
After
being inactive for fourteen months from February 2001 to April
2002 because of promotional problems, many people may have thought
that he had retired, but Ndou is now hoping to make the most of
his ‘comeback’.
“My
family is very happy and it has been a long time since all my
Australian fans have seen me on television,” he said.
“I
just have to keep on winning and hopefully the title shot will
happen one day. There are lots of other good fights out there
for me, people like Ricky Hatton, I want to fight him. He just
beat Vince Phillips, but he beat an old man. I think he should
be fighting someone like me. He doesn’t want anything to
do with me. But one day we will have to share the ring.”
